MOOT
Moot is a competition relating to a given branch of Law in which students from different universities, usually from different countries, have to resolve a hypothetical case and defend their conclusions before a simulated court or arbitration tribunal. The objective is for students to develop the complementary skills and abilities which will be of great use to them in their training and their future professional careers. The Faculty of Law traditionally participates in three such competitions: the International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition, the International Commercial Law and Arbitration Competition and the International Commercial Arbitration Moot
International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition
The International Criminal Court Moot is an international criminal law simulation competition sponsored by the International Criminal Court. The competition has been held every year since 2013. It comprises two phases: a written phase and an oral presentation of arguments which takes place in the city of The Hague (the Netherlands). In each edition, a new case is posed. The case is fictitious but related to the crimes over which the ICC has jurisdiction. It is often directly related to real cases being judged by the international organism. In the first phase, teams have to prepare three texts answering questions the case raises from different procedural perspectives. In the second phase, the teams will travel to The Hague to defend their arguments in the roles assigned to them in different simulated trials.
The University of Cadiz’s team is organised by the University’s Criminal Law Department. The first teams were coordinated by Dr. Esther Hava, assisted by Dr. Alejandra Pastrana. The UCA team is currently supervised by Dr. Diego Boza (Criminal Law) with the collaboration of PhD student Dévika Pérez.
The members of the team to compete in each edition are chosen following a preparatory course and a selection test. Each team has four members: three speakers and one researcher.

International Commercial Law and Arbitration Moot Competition and Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
The Faculty of Law participates in two world-scale moot competitions focussed on commercial law and arbitration. These competitions, involving cases based on multinational business relationships, have their final phases in Madrid and Vienna and are conducted (in both their written and oral phases) in Spanish and English, respectively. Due to the intensity of the training received by the participants in these two events, internationally acclaimed law firms have likened them to a year’s work practice in their offices.
Teams in the Madrid Moot are usually made up of about eight students, while those in the Vis Moot have only four. In the selection process for team members, priority will be given to a student’s academic record, together with their command of languages (above all English, but also French, German and Italian), their professional plans for the future and their capacity for teamwork.
Team members undertake to use the most appropriate resources, both for the timely drafting of their claims and counter-argument texts and for their oral arguments in court. They will also have a personal tutor to aid their progress in the task. This is a very demanding activity which requires intense study of applicable law (both substantive and procedural) during the summer and Christmas holidays.
The Vice Dean for Academic Planning has been awarding participants 4 ECTS for activities (as also prescribed in the official degree description). To earn those credits, the student has to complete the competition.
4th year Law students and students doing the University Master’s Degree in Legal Practice can count this activity as their end-of-degree project. In this case, they cannot request recognition of the four credits for activities.

Students interested in participating must be enrolled (in any year) in the Bachelor’s Degree in Law or the Double Bachelor’s Degree in Law and Business Administration at the University of Cadiz. The teams are coordinated and supervised by David Morán, Senior Professor in Commercial Law.
