Welcome

Welcome to the web site of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cádiz. This relatively new faculty is located at Jerez de la Frontera and Algeciras, two of the University’s four campuses. It currently has almost two thousand students enrolled on its Law and Criminology and Security programmes and a teaching staff made up of around a hundred lecturers and researchers, many of whom also play a major role in other bachelor’s and master’s degree courses offered by the University.

Our Faculty is now based on the Campus de la Asunción in Jerez de la Frontera, a campus that was inaugurated in 2004, when we moved here from our previous location on Avenida León de Carranza. As a result, we have been able to create a much more integrated teaching and research environment and provide more services for our students and administrative staff. To meet the particular needs of the Province of Cadiz, the Faculty is also present in Algeciras, where it occupies a new building inaugurated in 2015 and equipped with pioneering teaching technology. We should mention that the campus library holds the European Seal of Excellence EFQM 500+ for its services and facilities. It was the first Spanish university library to receive such recognition, and has successfully maintained that status over the years.

Both the Jerez and Algeciras campuses are urban facilities with excellent rail and bus connections. They also have several car parks and bicycle lanes, making them very easy to access. The Faculty of Law shares the Jerez campus with the faculties of Social Sciences and Communication. The additional presence of the main administrative buildings for the faculties of Business Sciences, Labour Relations and Nursing generates an enriching, multidisciplinary environment for students and staff alike. In the near future, work is also expected to start on the building of a second lecture block on the campus. This new block will alleviate the space problems we have been experiencing due to the growth of the different faculties and the increase in the number of degree programmes being offered on the campus.

On the Jerez campus our Faculty offers bachelor’s degrees in Law and Criminology, a double bachelor’s degree in Law and Business Administration, and a double bachelor’s degree in Law and Criminology and Security. The Bachelor’s Degree in Law is also offered at the Algeciras campus, where a double bachelor’s degree in Law and Labour Relations has also been available since 2019-2020. Thanks to an agreement with the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), our fourth-year Law students can study all the electives in their degree programme as fully recognised students at that university’s School of Law. The internationalisation of our studies is one of our Faculty’s main priorities, and one with which we aim to attract more foreign students and researchers and boost our graduates’ language skills. With this in mind, we are increasing the number of courses taught in English and further capacitating our teaching staff.

Over the last few years, we have also gradually augmented our postgraduate study programmes. We now offer official master’s degrees in Legal Practice (organized jointly with the Jerez Bar Association since 2012-2013), Criminal Violence, and Legal-Social Protection for Vulnerable People and Groups; a bilingual official master’s degree in International Relations and Migration; and our university’s own Master’s Degree in Tax Consultancy. In the near future, we plan to introduce new master’s degree programmes that will address the specific demands of the legal sector, focussing in particular on the virtualisation of certain courses to make it easier for professionals to access this training and thereby increase their skills. At the same time, we are actively engaged in PhD programmes in Law and Social, Criminological and Behavioural Sciences—postgraduate studies in which our researchers make an outstanding contribution.

Our vision of student training as a process involving multiple skills and capacities has led to the development of activities like the Debating Club, the MOOT competitions and our Legal Clinic, where, for several years now, students have had the opportunity to come into contact with professionals, hone their oratory skills and compete with teams from other universities. Numerous activities are also continually being organised by the UCA-EULEN Security Forum, the Jean Monnet modules and our different departments. These initiatives, which crucially complement the official syllabuses followed by our students, enrich life in the Faculty.

As a public institution, the Faculty of Law has a duty to serve and is aware of its responsibility towards the Province of Cadiz and its social and productive sectors. This web page serves as an introductory gateway which, we hope, will help you find out more about the Faculty, what we do here, and what we can contribute to society. Once again, welcome.
Best regards,

Isabel Zurita Martín
